Healthcare leaders unite to answer local hospital’s call for assistance
Friday, 13 June 2025: In a powerful show of support and solidarity, two leaders in South African healthcare have rallied together to answer the call for essential items at Bertha Gxowa, a Gauteng Provincial hospital. This collaboration underscores the role private sector partnerships can play in strengthening public healthcare during a pivotal time for the nation’s healthcare system. 
At a special event recently held at the hospital, teams from Performance Health and Universal Care delivered much-needed items for the paediatric ward and other units of the facility. Both companies form part of the Universal Healthcare group, providing clearing house services and pharmacy network management respectively, among other services, and are united in their approach to supporting government-led initiatives.
The appeal for assistance included 1755 pairs of hospital pyjamas, nightdresses and gowns for little patients ranging from the ages of one to 12 years old, which were provided by Performance Health. Furthermore, custom-made chairs were supplied by Universal Care to help meet the need for comfortable seating in specific waiting areas around the hospital.
Dr Nono Ledwaba-Mweli, Medical Director of Universal Care, noted that private companies in South Africa have an essential role to play as the country advances towards its National Health Insurance (NHI) goals.
“Our ongoing relationship with state healthcare facilities such as Bertha Gxowa Hospital enables us to respond swiftly to critical needs, from anti-microbial and sporicidal curtains to these essential comfort items. Our latest contribution reaffirms our commitment to meaningful partnerships that help to bolster patient care,” she said. 
“Beyond providing material support, these partnerships foster a sense of shared responsibility and trust between the public and private sectors. This collaboration is vital not only for immediate improvements but also for building a sustainable healthcare system where patient dignity and comfort are prioritised alongside clinical care. We believe that by working together, we can create lasting positive change that reaches every corner of our healthcare landscape,” added Dr Ledwaba-Mweli
Echoing this sentiment, Dr Mandisa Maholwana, Managing Director at Performance Health, emphasised the tangible impact of private sector support on patient wellbeing. “Patient comfort plays a crucial role in recovery and morale. By providing these items, we’re not just delivering supplies – we’re sending a message to patients that they are cared for and valued, particularly during their most vulnerable moments.”
