‘GIVE US A HAND’ – South Africans called to show up this Mandela Day

Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

This Mandela Day, Ladles of Love is calling on South Africans to turn good intentions into meaningful action through its Hands-On Heroes campaign, encouraging people to give 67 minutes to help support the nutrition and education of 20,000 preschool children in under-resourced communities.

The campaign features flagship volunteer events at DHL Stadium in Cape Town on 17 July and the Johannesburg EXPO Centre, Nasrec, on 22 July 2026. Those unable to attend can host their own Create Your Own Hands-On Hero event between 17 and 31 July using Hands-On Hero Kits delivered  anywhere in South Africa.

“Every year, people ask what they can do for Mandela Day,” says Danny Diliberto, Founder of Ladles of Love. “This campaign gives them an answer. The activities are ready, the need is real, and we want South Africans to spend 67 minutes making a difference in the lives of children.”

Volunteers at the flagship events can participate in four activity zones – Make, Create, Craft and Grow – where they will prepare sandwiches and nutrition packs, create educational resources, and build grow boxes with vegetable and herb seeds to support urban farmers supplying preschools with fresh produce.

The campaign has attracted support from well-known South Africans across sport, entertainment and food, including Zola Nene, Lungi Ngidi, Marc Lottering, GoodLuck, and the Stormers, who will help encourage more South Africans to volunteer.

Businesses are also encouraged to participate through a ready-made Mandela Day team-building experience, removing the need to organise activities or source beneficiaries.

“Many companies want to make a meaningful contribution but don’t have the capacity to organise it themselves,” says Diliberto. “Hands-On Heroes makes it easy for teams to give back while creating a lasting impact.”

Mandela Day honours the 67 years Nelson Mandela dedicated to public service and human rights. Through Hands-On Heroes, Ladles of Love is inviting every South African to honour that legacy with a simple call to action: Give us a hand.
