Public Statement: Inclusive Governance and Respect for All Voices in South Africa’s Future

Read Time:1 Minute, 51 Second

Johannesburg, South Africa – 26 May 2025 – In this defining moment of South Africa’s democracy, following the national elections and the beginning of discussions around a Government of National Unity (GNU), we, the people, call for full transparency, inclusion, and fairness in shaping the country’s future.

While we recognize and welcome high-level engagements with global figures — including recent developments involving President Cyril Ramaphosa and Donald Trump — we must express concern over the lack of broader consultation in these conversations. Such decisions must not be made behind closed doors, or solely by those in elite political or economic spaces. The future of our country belongs to all South Africans, and so too must our voices be part of these crucial discussions.

The GNU, which is being presented as a way forward, must reflect the full democratic will of the people. That includes political parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), both of which earned significant support at the ballot box. The MK party’s victory in KwaZulu-Natal — defeating the ANC, DA, and IFP — is a clear message from the people. To exclude such voices from national decision-making would be a betrayal of the democratic process.

Furthermore, South Africa’s leadership cannot afford to overlook the essential role of traditional leaders, royal families, and traditional healers. These figures remain deeply rooted in the lives of millions, particularly in rural communities. Their knowledge systems, values, and connection to the people must be part of building a future that is truly representative of our nation.

We call for:

  • Transparent public reporting on international engagements that affect our economy and sovereignty.

  • A Government of National Unity that includes all major political voices, not just a convenient few.

  • Formal recognition and inclusion of traditional leaders and healers in national dialogues and developmental planning.

South Africa’s strength lies in its diversity — of culture, of political thought, and of history. Let us not build a new chapter that repeats the mistakes of exclusion. Let us ensure that all South Africans, from all walks of life, are truly seen, heard, and represented.

Issued in the spirit of democracy, unity, and the right to be governed by the will of the people.
