Rolling Toward Freedom: Celebrating Go Skateboarding Day at Pimville DIY Skatepark
By Kwanele Ngobese
[18 June 2025] –For many of us, skateboarding wasn’t something we were born into — we discovered it one trick, one fall, and one game at a time. Long before we ever touched grip tape, we were glued to our screens, collecting tapes and pulling off gravity-defying moves in Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Those games didn’t just entertain us — they shaped us. They introduced an entire generation to the raw creativity and unfiltered freedom that defines skateboarding.
Fast forward to today, and that passion has rolled into the streets. In almost every neighborhood, there’s that one skater (SHOUTOUT TO THAT ONE GREYTOWN SKATER) — usually with scraped knees, a busted deck, and a relentless drive. And that’s exactly what skateboarding teaches: resilience, self-expression, and the courage to keep pushing, no matter how many times you fall.
This June 21, the global skate community comes together once again for Go Skateboarding Day, and right here in South Africa, the heart of that celebration beats at Pimville DIY Skatepark. It’s more than just concrete and wood — it’s a symbol of unity, purpose, and the raw energy that skaters bring into their communities.
Red Bull Skateboarding athlete Brandon Valjalo, one of South Africa’s brightest skateboarding stars, shared his thoughts ahead of the big day:
“Skateboarding isn’t just a sport — it’s a lifestyle. It teaches you discipline, creativity, resilience, and freedom. Go Skateboarding Day is a celebration of all of that and more. If I can inspire even one kid to pick up a board and go for it, then I’ve done my job. Go Skateboarding Day is for the dreamers, the beginners, and everyone in between.”
Valjalo’s words echo the reality we see on the ground: skateboarding keeps kids active, inspired, and out of trouble. The more skaters we see in our townships and suburbs, the more hope we see growing alongside them.
At Pimville DIY Skatepark, the celebration will be more than just tricks and contests. It will be about community. Expect live music, giveaways, good vibes, and — of course — a whole lot of skating.
So whether you’re a seasoned pro, just learning how to push, or simply drawn to the culture, come out and be part of something real. Because in a world full of noise and distraction, skateboarding offers something rare: a place to be yourself, fall freely, and rise even stronger.
