TV and Radio presenters Mandla Magwaza and Mpumi Mlambo to host uShuni Womhlaba talent search competition show on SABC 1

Ukhozi FM’s Mandla Magwaza, affectionately known by his listeners as “Njinji wami” and Metro FM’s Mpumi Mlambo, aka “MSAKAZI”, will host SABC 1’s brand-new exciting singing and music competition reality television show, uShuni Womhlaba.

Committed to discovering South Africa’s cream of the crop in the traditional music scene, uShuni Womhlaba will make its debut on the 7th of July 2024, from 18:00 to 19:00.

The versatile presenters will, on a weekly basis, keep South Africans glued to their screens as contestants battle it out for the coveted title. 40 talented contestants will be selected through regional and online auditions, opening this opportunity up to aspiring musicians across the country.

With a unique and vibrant television format, the show will run for 16 weeks, ending in October 2024. Contestants will compete in three entertaining, exciting, and emotional rounds, putting their musicality to the test.

Mlambo believes that the show will unlock South Africa’s talent and give young people a chance. “I am honoured and happy to be part of uShuni Womhlaba. Our country has many unknown, talented stars that need to shine on a national platform. I urge all South Africans to watch and participate in the show. I look forward to both in-person and online engagement,” said Mlambo.

Magwaza, who will co-host the show with Mlambo, said the show will help preserve South Africa’s cultural diversity. “South Africa is a country rich with talent in many spheres of life. When it comes to music, arts, and culture, we excel even more, producing music that crosses borders and touches people everywhere in the world. I am confident that this show will unearth the best of Maskandi, Mbaqanga, Isicathamiya, Afro-pop, and traditional music talent. I am honoured to be a part of this show,” Magwaza said.

Incredible prizes await the coveted winner, including a Grand Cash Prize, a once-in-a- lifetime artist mentorship that will provide invaluable guidance, and a recording deal to produce an album, working with Mzansi’s finest in the scene. The second and third prize winners will also walk away with prizes that could help propel them in their efforts to take their music careers to the next level.

The show will feature seasoned judges whose composite musical journeys have had tremendous impact in the South African music scene. From legendary to internationally acclaimed. This ensemble will journey with the contestants in growing their artistry, helping them through different stages of the competition, as they navigate their way throughout the weeks.

Rapper and songwriter Big Zulu, known for his hit singles like “Imali Eningi” and Inhlupheko, with talented composer and singer, Msaki will be working alongside rapper, musician, actress and poet, Sho Madjozi and veteran Maskandi musician, Phuzekhemisi. These musicians will bring a blend of expertise to balance the mix of musicality, performance and technicality required, amongst other things.

SABC 1 and Telkom SA, have over the years, been big supporters and partners of television programmes that seek to unearth South Africa’s finest talent.
