Vergelegen Open To Visitors After Fire Damages Stables Restaurant
Vergelegen Wine Estate remains open to visitors following a fire on Tuesday that caused extensive damage to its Stables restaurant.
The estate confirmed that only the Stables restaurant is closed until further notice, while all other food and beverage outlets and visitor experiences continue to operate as normal.
A swift response by Vergelegen’s firefighting team, together with crews from the City of Cape Town, helped contain the fire to the Stables building. However, the burning thatch roof resulted in significant damage to the restaurant.
All patrons and staff were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. Vergelegen said it is working with fire investigators to determine the cause of the incident.
Vergelegen Managing Director Wayne Coetzer expressed gratitude for the support received from the surrounding community.
“We have been truly overwhelmed by the extraordinary support shown by our neighbours and the wider community,” Coetzer said.
The estate said it is not yet possible to confirm when the Stables restaurant will reopen. Guests with booking enquiries can contact Vergelegen customer services.
Wine tastings, including the estate’s popular cheese board offering, are open daily. The Rose Terrace Tea Room, Potting Shed Gift Shop and nearby Creamery — which offers ice cream and takeaway coffee — are also operating.
The children’s play area near the Stables restaurant remains open. Holiday activities include the annual Easter egg hunt scheduled for April 5, with tickets going on sale March 12.
Picnics in the camphor forest will be available from March 19 until the end of April.
Other upcoming events include the Harvest Celebration on March 25, with tickets already on sale.
Visitors can also explore the estate’s gardens, library and manor house. Experiences such as the fauna and flora eco tour, cellar tours, garden tour and the sip-and-stroll tasting continue as scheduled.
