EmpowaYouth Heads to Ekurhuleni: Connecting Young People with Tangible Opportunities
South Africa, Johannesburg, Friday, 08 May2025—The impactful youth empowerment platform, EmpowaYouth, is making its way to the City of Ekurhuleni—South Africa’s manufacturing capital—for a powerful three-day summit from 26 to 28 May. The event aims to connect unemployed youth with real, tangible opportunities, including bursaries, learnerships, entrepreneurial funding, skills training, and job opportunities.
Driven by the real challenges young people face,EmpowaYouth was established to bring opportunities closer to youth and improve their socio-economic conditions. Currently, the youth unemployment rate is approximately 59.7% nationally, and approximately 36.9% in Ekurhuleni alone, many young people, particularly in peri-urban and township communities, remain excluded from access to critical career resources and career pathways. EmpowaYouth tackles this gap by exposing youth to diverse industries, career guidance, entrepreneurship and investment opportunities, bridging the divide between ambition and access.
“Ekurhuleni is not only a key economic driver – it’s a region full of potential. With EmpowaYouth, we aim to ensure that the youth in this area are ready and equipped to step into the opportunities that surround them,” says Sechaba Motsieloa, Empowaworx Managing Executive.
Ekurhuleni, stands as the industrial and manufacturing heart of South Africa, and serves as a major logistical and economic hub within Gauteng. It boasts one of the largest manufacturing workforces in the country and plays a critical role in national industrial output. While Johannesburg often grabs the spotlight, Ekurhuleni remains the true engine room of the country’s manufacturing economy – making it a fitting backdrop for empowering young people to contribute meaningfully to economic growth.
The upcoming edition of EmpowaYouth will bring together industry leaders, governmentstakeholders and funders and development partners all collaborating to provide master classes, bursaries, learnerships, mentorship and skills development opportunities. The platform champions not only academic excellence but alsovocational and artisanal skills which are vital inbuilding a resilient and inclusive economy.
Since inception as a one-day event in 2018, EmpowaYouth has evolved into a nationalplatform hosting three-day and week-longactivations across South Africa. To date, it has positively impacted over 100,000 young people, delivering tangible outcomes including:
• Over 800 job placements
• More than 350 learnerships
• 450 bursaries awarded
• 250 young entrepreneurs funded
