How Modern Pawnbroking is Shaking Off Its Negative Perception

Read Time:2 Minute, 55 Second

The traditional image of pawnbroking is rapidly changing as wealthy individuals increasingly turn to high-end pawnbroking for short-term liquidity. With growing demand from affluent clients, pawnbroking is evolving into a sophisticated financial service for asset-rich individuals seeking discreet and convenient funding options.

Lamna Financial, one of South Africa’s leading high-end pawnbrokers, is at the forefront of this transformation.

“Pawnbroking has undergone a fundamental shift, and the old stigma is being erased,” says Charles Meyerowitz, CEO of Lamna Financial. “We are seeing high-net-worth individuals using their assets such as luxury cars, fine art, jewellery, and even rare watches as collateral to unlock liquidity quickly, without the traditional red tape of conventional banking.”

Lamna’s High-End Pawnbroking Index

“The recent data from the Lamna Financials’ High-End Pawnbroking Index (LHPI) reveals a significant increase in demand from wealthy clients, demonstrating that pawnbroking is no longer the preserve of those in financial distress,” says Meyerowitz. “We’ve seen an 81% increase in loan value for August which further underscores this trend, indicating a marked rise in the volume of transactions from affluent individuals and an increase in the average loan size over the past year.”

“Pawnbroking has become a highly tailored service, allowing wealthy clients to access capital by leveraging high-value assets quickly and discreetly,” he adds. “It’s a win-win situation for those seeking liquidity without sacrificing long-term financial security.”

Private Lending and the Changing Financial Landscape

The LHPI figures continue to rise with an 81% increase month on month and with a 34% increase in the average loan size. Demonstrating that wealthy individuals are more inclined to explore alternatives like pawnbroking.

“The flexibility and speed of pawnbroking are what appeal most to wealthy clients,” he adds. “Traditional financial institutions can be slow, and approval processes may involve invasive credit checks or risk of asset forfeiture. Pawnbroking offers a quicker, more streamlined solution.”

Meyrowitz says that despite the Private Sector Credit increasing to its highest level since July 2023, by 1.45% last month, Lamna’s figures indicate that there is still a need for liquidity at the high-end of the market.

A New Era of Discreet, Asset-Based Lending

Lamna Financial has positioned itself as a key player in this modern pawnbroking landscape. With a commitment to transparency and discretion, the company caters to clients who may own valuable assets but need immediate access to funds for short-term expenses, business investments, or even lifestyle purchases.

“In some cases, our clients can access millions of rands within twenty-four hours, this is not the case with traditional lenders,” he explains. “We’ve had everything from luxury cars to yachts and even a hearse come through our doors, the opportunities to leverage lazy assets is not limited to just watches and jewellery.”

One of the most valuable items Lamna Financial has provided a loan against was a private jet, a clear indication of the high level of assets being used in these transactions. The average loan-to-value ratio for such high-end items ranges between 50% and 70%, offering clients a substantial amount of liquidity.

“Whether it’s to finance a business opportunity, fund a luxury purchase, or bridge a short-term cash flow gap, pawnbroking is becoming a viable financial solution for high-net-worth individuals,” says Meyerowitz. “As this industry continues to evolve, it is clear that pawnbroking has entered a new era—one defined by discretion, convenience, and financial empowerment.”
